2007 Ibanez JEM 20th Anniversary Steve Vai Signature Limited Edition Acrylic Swirl

In 2007, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Steve Vai's legendary Ibanez JEM series, Ibanez introduced one of the most iconic commemorative models ever produced—the JEM 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Acrylic Swirl. Limited to only 500 pieces worldwide, every guitar is a true one-of-a-kind work of art.
Unlike conventional wooden-bodied guitars, the JEM20 features an exceptionally rare transparent acrylic body, encapsulating a mesmerizing three-dimensional Swirl design within the material itself. Combined with the built-in green LED illumination, the guitar creates the illusion of floating colors suspended inside crystal-clear acrylic under stage lighting. The JEM20 is far more than just a musical instrument—it is a modern work of art.
The most remarkable feature of the JEM20 is undoubtedly its completely transparent acrylic body. Rather than using ordinary industrial acrylic, Ibanez commissioned a specialized Japanese manufacturer renowned for producing large transparent viewing panels for public aquariums. Because this company had decades of experience manufacturing massive, ultra-clear, impurity-free acrylic structures for world-class aquariums, it possessed the advanced expertise required for a project of this complexity. The JEM20 benefits from the very same premium-grade material and manufacturing techniques.
The greatest challenge was not producing a transparent body, but creating the stunning three-dimensional Tri-Color Swirl suspended within it. The vibrant colors are neither printed nor painted onto the surface. Instead, liquid pigments in pink, yellow, and green are permanently encapsulated inside the acrylic during the molding process, resulting in a flowing three-dimensional pattern unique to every single instrument—as if the legendary DNA Swirl had been frozen forever inside crystal. Because the manufacturing process is extraordinarily complex, the exact production method remains a closely guarded trade secret to this day. As a result, no two of the 500 JEM20 guitars share the same swirl pattern.
To further enhance the visual impact of the transparent body, Ibanez integrated eight green LEDs inside the guitar. By pulling up the tone control, the entire body glows from within, illuminating the encapsulated swirl pattern and creating a breathtaking three-dimensional effect unlike anything else ever produced.
To complement the unique acoustic characteristics of the acrylic body, DiMarzio developed a dedicated set of Trans JEM pickups exclusively for the JEM20. They faithfully deliver Steve Vai's signature clarity, expansive dynamic range, and rich harmonic content. Combined with a Japanese-made Prestige five-piece Maple/Walnut neck, the iconic Vine inlay, and the Edge Pro Double Locking Tremolo, every detail represents the pinnacle of Ibanez craftsmanship at the time.
The JEM has always been Steve Vai's most recognizable signature model, and the JEM20 stands as one of the most collectible guitars in the entire series. Its extremely high production cost and limited production run quickly elevated it to legendary status among collectors after it was discontinued. Nearly twenty years later, the JEM20 remains one of the most innovative, visually striking, and difficult-to-reproduce instruments in Ibanez history.
This particular example is a true collector's piece in near-mint condition. The acrylic body is completely free from cracks, crazing, or any signs of age-related deterioration. It comes complete with all original paperwork, making it an exceptionally rare find.
