The Gibson Les Paul Special is one of Gibson's iconic models from the golden era of the 1950s and 1960s. Released in 1955, it was based on the Les Paul Junior, with the addition of a second P90 pickup and a three-way switch for enhanced tonal functionality. The Les Paul Special was positioned right between the Goldtop and the Junior, offering the versatility of dual pickups without the weight and high cost of the Goldtop. This balance made the Les Paul Special Gibson's second best-selling model the year after its release, trailing only the Les Paul Junior. Eventually, in late 1959, the model was revised and renamed the SG Special. By the 1970s, when the Les Paul was reintroduced to Gibson's production line, the Special had already surpassed the Junior in popularity.
This guitar is historically significant, and every detail conveys the essence of a true vintage guitar. It features the classic TV Yellow finish of the Les Paul Special, with a body and neck made of Honduran mahogany aged over 70 years, and a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard . Like the Les Paul Standard Burst, which now commands a market price of over a million dollars, it uses mahogany from trees aged over 70 years, allowing for perfect resonance between the strings and the body. Paired with the original Soap bar P90s, it produces a uniquely dry, ethereal tone that modern reissues cannot replicate.
The guitar is in exceptional condition, with a few minor dings and natural finish checking, but no significant structural damage or neck repairs. Only the rear pickup coil has been rewound, but this does not affect the tone. The guitar’s tuners, Bonnet Knobs, Tailpiece, the complete set of Bumblebee capacitors, and all four pots are 100% original. The nut and frets have never been replaced. The frets are about 60% worn but still playable, which is extremely rare.
In this era of rising prices and inflation, investing in vintage guitars is one of the best choices. The value of 1950s Les Pauls continues to appreciate each year, and finding one in such well-preserved, original condition is rare, making it highly collectible and an excellent store of value.
