2007 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Eric Clapton Stratocaster Blackie by Mark Kendrick

In 1970, Eric Clapton took apart three mid-1950s Fender Stratocasters and selected the components he liked best from each: the black 1956 body for its appearance, a 1957 neck that felt the most comfortable in his hands, and the pickup assembly that sounded the best. He combined these parts into a single Stratocaster, creating the legendary "Blackie," which became his primary guitar throughout the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. It remains the most iconic guitar associated with Eric Clapton.
By 1985, after years of extensive use, Blackie had reached the end of its life. The neck had become so severely worn that it could no longer withstand the tension of six strings, making the guitar unplayable. That same year, Fender Marketing Manager Dan Smith approached Eric Clapton with the idea of building him a unique Stratocaster, while also discussing the possibility of producing a signature model based on Clapton's personal preferences.
At Clapton's request, the guitar featured a soft V-shaped neck inspired by his Martin acoustic guitars, Lace Sensor pickups for greater dynamic range, an MDX mid-boost circuit capable of providing up to 25dB of midrange gain, and a Master TBX Tone Control. The Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster was officially introduced in 1988, and these specifications remained unchanged until they were updated in 2001.
In 1990, Fender officially presented Eric Clapton with a separate black Stratocaster built specifically for him. This guitar featured a beautifully figured flame maple neck crafted by Mike Stevens, paired with a body built by J.W. Black, while its specifications faithfully followed those of the 1988 Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster. It is widely regarded as the first Blackie officially built by Fender exclusively for Eric Clapton.
This 2007 Fender Custom Shop recreation was masterfully built by Mark Kendrick as a New Old Stock (NOS) model, faithfully capturing the spirit of this historic instrument. It features a beautifully figured flame maple Soft V-shaped neck, Lace Sensor pickups, the Master TBX Tone Control, and the signature 25dB Mid-Boost circuit. The TBX functions as both a treble and bass expander: from settings 0–5 it operates as a conventional tone control, while beyond 5 it progressively reduces circuit resistance, allowing more low and high frequencies to pass through. Combined with the active 25dB mid-boost, it delivers a remarkably rich, dynamic, and versatile tonal character.
Overall condition is approximately 80%, showing normal signs of use along with a few minor cosmetic blemishes. The guitar remains in excellent playing condition.
Comes with the original Fender case, COA and paperwork.
