全新2023 Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Korina Flying V Reissue

NT$ 11,098.00

Due to the intense competition between Gibson and Fender in the mid-1950s, Gibson's then-president Ted McCarty had no choice but to strike back. He formed a design team, including himself, to sketch out three new "modernist" guitar designs to counter Fender. These designs aimed to be more eye-catching, ultimately resulting in the creation of the Flying V, Explorer, and Moderne. McCarty hoped these models would transform Gibson and align the company with the contemporary trends. While the Moderne was never produced, the Flying V and Explorer went on to become iconic models for Gibson.

Seth Lover, the designer of the PAF humbucker pickups, reportedly laughed when he first saw the team’s initial guitar design, saying, “Well, that looks like a flying V.” Hence, they named this V-shaped guitar the "Flying V." In late 1957, Gibson officially introduced the new Flying V model in their promotional magazine with the tagline: "A guitar with truly futuristic, avant-garde, and modern lines."

The Flying V's dramatic straight lines completely replaced the traditional curves of 1950s guitar designs. It retained Gibson's traditional three-position pickup switch, and the headstock mirrored the shape of the guitar body. During that era, lighter-colored guitars were more popular than the dark mahogany finishes, so Gibson used the finest bleached Korina wood for these new models, giving them a lighter appearance. Despite this innovative design, Gibson sold only 81 units of the Flying V in 1958, leading to its discontinuation in 1959. However, Gibson soon planned to reissue the Flying V, which was reintroduced in 1967. This new version became a market success, solidifying its status as a classic model.

In 2023, Gibson Custom launched a premium reissue of the 1958 Korina Flying V. This reissue faithfully replicated the specifications of the original 1958 model, featuring a VOS (Vintage Original Spec) finish, selected Korina body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, a white/black/white three-ply pickguard, and gold hardware. The guitar's bottom side included a black rubber strip designed to prevent slipping while playing seated. It was equipped with a set of Custombucker PAF pickups. Korina, with tonal characteristics similar to mahogany but offering sharper highs, richer lows, and more responsive mids, is a rare and premium wood. Due to its scarcity and difficulty in processing, Gibson Custom ceased using Korina for any guitar models after exhausting their last batch in 2023.

The guitar is in brand-new condition.
